Banner Localization

Legacy Localization Documentation

This document references updated functionality as part of the redesigned Layouts experience in 2025. If you need to reference the legacy documentation, you can find that here. You can also check out our migration guide here

DataGrail Consent supports localization of the banner experience for all text, button actions, and categories displayed to data subjects. Below is the list of the languages we support and present to data subjects based on their browser's language settings:

Supported Languages
  • Bulgarian
  • Croatian
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Finnish
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Hungarian
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Latvian
  • Lithuanian
  • Maltese
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Romanian
  • Russian
  • Slovak
  • Slovene
  • Spanish
  • Swedish

DataGrail will only display the language if all associated text has been provided. To help with any specific strings, you can use built-in machine translation to create localized text for any of the languages listed above.

Data Subject Experience

DataGrail will serve a completely localized banner to data subjects based on their browser settings. Here's an example:

Localized Banner 1

As you can see, data subjects can change the banner language to English or any other complete languages (both categories and description text) using a drop down within the banner. If the data subject changes the banner language, we'll remember this preference for when they visit that site (with the same device) for next time.

For Developers

We read the Accept-Language request header to determine which language to serve to a data subject, in order of the probabilities provided by the header.

Selecting Languages for Localization

To localize the banner experience, you'll need to select the languages you wish to make available for localization, which also limits the potential options for a data subject to adjust their banner's language on your website.

Navigate to the settings page and select the languages you wish to provide localized text for throughout DataGrail Consent:

Localizing Banner Layout Assets

After enabling languages for localization, you will be able to generate translations for each asset that has copy within your banner layout. For example, select a header asset to find the fields to translate the copy on of your header to the various languages you've selected:

You will see a clear warning on each asset if the asset has not been fully translated:

All progress is saved instantly. If you do not complete fields for a language, the banner will not render that specific language for data subjects:

This means that we will look at the next available language preference within the data subject's browser setting and attempt to serve that language by default. If there are no alternate languages set for that data subject, we will render the English banner by default.

AI Localization

You can localize all banner assets for any languages you've chosen within the settings tab using AI. This is useful if you want to test this functionality or have coverage for languages for which you need additional support.

You can choose to generate localized text for all the languages you have selected, or for specific languages to be translated from English.

Important

To reiterate the confirmation dialog box above: any text that was already provided for that language will be overwritten by this workflow. Specific URL links will be carried over to the updated language.
